"The legislative body of the Colville Confederated Tribes rejected a proposal to open a molybdenum mine on its 1.4 million acre north-central Washington reservation after a vote by tribal members. The Colville Business Council's action Thursday reflected a 1,254-847 vote against overturning a 1995 mining moratorium to allow development of a mine on Mount Tolman near Keller, which some members consider sacred ground. Proponents said the proposed mine, which would disturb about 3,700 acres, would employ about 450 people and bring as much as $240 million a year in royalties to the impoverished tribe. "Money doesn't drive everything," Tribal Chairman Harvey Moses Jr. said after the vote was certified Thursday. "We're concerned about our environment and our culture and traditions." |
